Another rainy day - time for another legend - Quentin Tarantino (Sophie)

It’s a Bingo

Inglorious Basterds is war film mostly set at the end of the World War II around Germany and France. It was directed by Quentin Tarantino and stars the likes of Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz and Diane Kruger.

The film can be subdivided into 5 chapters. Chapter one starts ‘once upon a time’ in Nazi-occupied France and introduces Colonel Hans Landa, played by Christoph Waltz, as the most meticulous, successful and feared member of the Waffen-SS, also known as the ‘Jew-Hunter’.  And this is basically what he does in that very first chapter, hunting Jewish people hidden by the French community. He does so in true Quentin Tarentino style – over-the-top – out-there and in-your-face!

Chapter two, which is set in the spring of 1944, introduces the soon to be well renown ‘Inglorious Basterds’ led by Special Forces Lieutenant Also Raine, played by Brad Pitt. According to Ltd Raine, the sole and only mission is ‘killing Nazis’.

Chapter three portrays ‘A German Night in Paris’. In German occupied Paris Shosanna is living under different identity and is the proprieter of a cinema. The cine has been chosen to screen a Nazi propaganda movie. This leads Shosanna to decide to burn down the cinema during the screening and killing all people, among them high ranking Nazi Officers, in the cinema.

Operation KINO (German for cinema), an operation with basically the same intention as all previous plots introduced in chapter five, however let by the British is introduced next. This chapter brings one of my favourite scenes, this is when the British agent gets discovered by ordering 3 drinks in tavern using the wrong three fingers. A big shot out between the Basterds, the Brits and the Nazis occurs, again in true Tarantino fashion. There are less survivors then there is blood.

Chapter five holds the grand finale of the movie. Takes the longest, has the most dead people in it and the most actions by far. The inglorious Basterds arrive at the cinema, pretending to be Italians. A cover which is in the end blown from the first minute.

I can’t tell you how the movie ends and who lives and who dies, but when considering that one should keep in mind that this is Tarantino movie and that the outcome is somewhat predictable.

The maestro (Tarantino) himself self has once again shown, that he has a great artistic freedom in what he does and that what he does, appears to turn into gold in an instant. A big credit also has to go to the cast. Up and foremost to Christoph Waltz, who is undoubtedly one of the best actors out there at the moment and has won the 2010 Best Actor in a Supporting role for his part in Inglorious Bastards. All in all – I think all what Tarantino is saying is the following:

Another movie in review - Anchorman 2 - The Legend continues (Sophie)

And they live happily ever after ... ? Well don’t get ahead of yourselves!

In Anchorman 2 – The Legend continues truly. In this sequel to Anchorman – The legend of Ron Burgundy the main story line is pretty much the same as in the first movie. Ron is still confused by females (including his now wife Veronica Corningstone), however this time he gets even more confused when he encounters an African-American female member of the media, who happens to be his boss. Ron and his gang are taking on New York and are taking over the 24 hours news channel by storm. Again in the story line Ron hits rock bottom and hits all the highs and lows. All of the men in the movie are behaving like little boys in cowboy suits.

The take on the sequel comes across as even more sarcastic than then the first one, but from my perspective makes for better memorable punch lines. Movie director Mckay, has managed to keep the core jokes at the expense of male privileges and not reuse the jokes from the first movie but rather build on them. It might be one of the most inspired cinema capable non-sense out there, but also one of the funniest.

Anchorman 2 is also full of celebrity cameo appearance (SPOILER ALERT!!), with the likes of Harrison Ford, Vince Vaughn, Liam Neeson, Jim Carrey and Will Smith. One of the best parts of the movie is the portrayal of Rupert Murdoch as the media mogul, the boss of all bosses, who speaks in this incredibly thick Australian accent, which in return makes Ron put the out there that he “thought Australian speaks the same as us”.

Brick, who is played by Steve Carrell, is also back in the movie as part of Ron’s gong. At the very start of the movie Brick re-enters the scene by attending his own funeral. Brick makes the best lines for this and I would like to share some of those with you.

Brick: Ron, why is it called the Big apple?
Ron: Because every street has an apple tree on it.

Ron: 2am to 5am news shift? That’s the graveyard shift.
Brick: I’m afraid of no ghost!

All up I think this sequel, out of the many sequels to first out there, is one of the better one. They have tried to reinvent themselves, the humour, the laughs and the cast are the same.

Movie Review - Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy (Sophie)

What a legend!

Anchorman – the legend of Ron Burgundy is a cult comedy testosterone loaded 1970s USA. It is about San Diego’s top-rated news anchorman Ron Burgundy. The movie comes with an at times overload of sarcastic humour, which could at times be viewed as humourless examples of gender inequality and ideal example of the double standards in the then male dominated world of media.

At the start of the movie Ron and his ‘gang’ are introduced to the audience and portray themselves as cocky, ignorant, sexist and even vein bunch of overly hetero sexual males. The plot of the movie starts when their whole world is being turned upside down by the arrival of an aspiring female journalist on the scene, of course no other than Veronica Corningstone. It becomes apparent form the arrival of Veronica that she has ultimately has her eyes not only on Ron himself but on his seat behind the new desk. This female presence unsettles the deeply and they are in every possible roundabout way to get rid of Veronica. The battle of the sexes ends with Veronica turning the tables on Ron and the gang and Ron hitting rock bottom in his career (which appears to be over) and on a personal level losing everything including his ego. Veronica takes over Ron’s job as ‘anchorman’, however in a time of need, when accidentally ends up in a bear cage, Ron returns to the scene and saves not just the day and the news, but also Veronica.

The 2004 movie was directed by Adam McKay, the former head writer of Saturday Night Live. It stares Will Ferrel, who has also co-written the movie and David Koechner, Steve Carrell and the never aging Paul Rudd as the members of his gang. Veronica Corningstone is being played by no other than ‘Married with Children’ star Christina Applegate.

Whilst this whole movie explores in a great satirical manner those outdated thoughts of male versus female dominance in the workplace, it also ridicules them. In the end I think nothing has changed in Ron, he might have become a bit tolerant at last. But then again, this is what makes this movie a good and provided for many laughs throughout.

Ron is truly a legend on the screen and this portrayal of this part of his life, so let me finish by saying

Stay Classy San Diego (Ron Burgundy)
And thanks for stopping by (Veronica Corningstone)
